Edward "Ted" H Hastings
May 20th, 1925 - July 7th, 2012
Edward H. (Ted) Hastings Ted, 87, of Olympia passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 7, 2012. He was born in Avon, Connecticut on May 20, 1925, to Frank and Gertrude Hastings. Ted graduated from Grossmont High School in La Mesa, CA in 1943. In 1947, he received a B.A. from Yale. He received his B.D. in 1950, from Yale Divinity School. He received an honorary D.D. from Pacific University in 1969. Ted served his country in the U.S. Navy from July 1943 to June 1946, in the U.S. Naval Hospital Corps and V12 Officer Training. He served at the San Diego Naval Hospital and at the Naval Yard Dispensary in Pearl Harbor. June 25, 1950, Ted was ordained by San Diego, CA Association of Congregational Churches. He served as pastor of Congregational and United Church of Christ parishes in Oregon, Washington and California from 1950 through 1976. In 1976, he was elected Conference Minister of the Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ. He retired from that position in 1987. He was a valued member of United Churches of Olympia, Rotary and Kiwanis. He was also active on boards of Spokane and Contra Costa County, CA Councils, and as president of Arizona Ecumenical Council and the New Mexico Conference of Churches. Ted is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Muriel; their three children, Carol Jean Holliger (Delaware OH), Paul Brian Hastings (Spokane), and Patricia Lynn O’Neill (Kelso); 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Frank Hastings, Robert Hastings, Donald Hastings, and Joel Hastings (all of California).
