Frederick George Flynn

Dr. Frederick George Flynn, DO, FAAN COL, Retired, US Army (14 January 1948 15 November 2015) Frederick G. Flynn was born on 14 January 1948 in Philadelphia, PA to George and Margaret Flynn. His family moved to Frankfurt, Germany for several years, returning to Toms River, NJ where he graduated from St. Rose High School, Belmar, NJ. After graduating college at Gannon University, Fred went to the Medical College of Virginia, where he obtained a graduate degree in Anatomy. He then went to medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience, in Kansas City. Fred joined the Army, and completed his Neurology internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He also completed a Fellowship in Behavioral Neurology at UCLA. Fred was Board Certified by the American Academy of Neurology and Psychiatry, and was a Fellow of the Academy. He proudly spent 30 years on active duty in the US Army, ending his career at Madigan Army Medical Center, where he served as Chief, Neurology; Chief, Behavioral Neurology; Program Director of the Neurology Residency Program and served as the Consultant to the Army Surgeon General in Neurology. After his retirement, he returned to Madigan as a civil servant and was asked to develop the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Program for Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He built the program with a wonderful team and served for seven years as the Medical Director, TBI until his retirement. Fred was recognized nationally in his field and was held in the highest esteem by his colleagues and peers. Fred met the love of his life, Nancy Greenfield in 1994. They married and brought their families together. Fred loved being a father and grandfather, and he cherished all the members of his family: Brian, his wife Lakela, with daughter Autumn (age 7), and twins Aubrey and Brayden (7 months) live in Tacoma. Sara, married to Bill, with Rowan (4), Isla (2) and Fiona (6 months) live on Long Island, NY. Katherine, with boyfriend Jasiu, live in Seattle, and Jessica lives in Nashville, TN. Fred had two sisters, Margaret (Lamp) and Suzanne Flynn. Fred was loved by many and will be greatly missed. We find comfort knowing that he is at peace. A funeral mass and memorial service will be held on Saturday, 12 December at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 7410 South 12th Street, Tacoma, WA at 1:30 pm. A reception will follow in the Church Hall.
