Donald "Don" L. Adkins
February 13th, 1943 - August 2nd, 2023
After battling an aggressive cancer, Donald (Don) Adkins went to his new home in heaven August 2, 2023, with family at his bedside. He and twin sister Donna were born in Oregon City on February 13, 1943. He grew up in the Orenco-Beaverton area, graduating from Beaverton High School in 1962. He was drafted into the Army in 1966, took his basic training at Ft. Ord, California and specialty training at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey. Don repaired Nighthawk surveillance equipment during his tour of duty in Viet Nam. He completed his 3 years of service at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where he was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of Staff Sgt. He also served in the Army Reserves in the 70's. After the Army, Don worked at ESCO Steel in Portland, and in 1980 earned his Bachelor's degree from Multnomah School of the Bible. Later he worked 20 years at Johnson Controls Battery Plant in Canby and at Bold Ideas. Don had a long history of jogging and fitness activities, which he continued, as much as he was able, into his 80th year. Don married Carolyn Hamilton on August 12, 1978 and made Canby his home until his passing. He was often seen jogging around town and attending his children's sporting events. His dedication to his church was shown by teaching Sunday School, serving as a deacon, driving the church bus, cleaning the carpet, and mowing the lawn. Don is survived by his wife Carolyn, children Sarah (Rick) Schemmel, Daniel, Ruth (Scott) Vandecoevering, and John, grandsons Sean and Mason Gearheart, step-grandchildren, Tyler Schemmel, Emma, John and Cohen Vandecoevering, sisters Donna Evans, Barbara Cooper, and Ilene Morgan, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Don's life will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023 @ 11:00 am at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Canby. "...well done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:23.
