Richard Harel Hopkins
December 20th, 1941 - March 4th, 2017
Richard Harel Hopkins, golfer and Seahawks fan, was born in Spokane, WA on December 20, 1941 and passed away peacefully at home March 4, 2017 in Tacoma, WA. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Barbara, son Nicholas Hopkins and his wife Connie, daughter Lisa Hopkins and her husband Brian, stepsons Brent Normann and his wife Jessica and Aaron Wilson and his wife Whitney, sisters Vicky and Patricia, and former wife Linda Hopkins. In addition, he was the proud Papa to six grandchildren: Morgan and her wife Chrystella, Fiona, Paris, Oliver, Marlee, and Banner. He was the son of Patricia Godwin and Harel Hopkins. Richards father, Harel Hopkins, was killed at Pearl Harbor shortly before Richards birth. Richard was one 5 children born to Patricia Godwin. His sisters included Barbara, Patty and Vicky. Richard grew up in Tacoma, Washington where he attended Washington Elementary school in north Tacoma. He attended Stadium High School where he played basketball and ran track, and competed in the high jump. His nickname was the zipper, due to his tall, thin build. After high school, he attended Olympic College and later graduated with his Bachelors degree from University of Arizona. He joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war and later served in the Army National Guard. He attended officer training school. He was proud of his military achievements where he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was in charge of a group tanks. His fascination with tanks and military strategy lasted throughout his lifetime. He married his high school sweetheart Linda Campanoli and together they lived in California where they raised two children, Lisa and Nick. They returned to Washington many years later to be closer to their families. They were married over 25 years. Richard worked for several manufacturing companies including Boeing, Firestone Tire, where he was a transportation manager, and Davis Walker Wire. At Firestone Tire Company, his love of golf led him to become the President of the company golf league where he organized and played in many tournaments. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own construction company, American Construction. He was very proud to have served homeowners and provide employment for many over 20 years. Richard married Barbara Wilson in 2003. Together they enjoyed dancing, spending time with family, going to football games, traveling to the coast, and watching classic films. His favorite movie was the African Queen. In addition, he loved the Seahawks, cars, jazz music, and The Game of Thrones. Richard was a man of very few words, but his words were kind and he loved a good joke, especially about roofers! A celebration of Richards life will be held Saturday, March 11th 3-5PM, South Tacoma Eagles Club, 7037 S. Pine St., Tacoma, WA. Casual or Seahawks attire. Refreshments provided.
