Catherine May Barney Schmidt Catherine May Barney Schmidt, 97, passed away January 29, 2012 in Olympia, Washington. She was born October 5, 1914 to Frank and Margaret DeBoer Nichols at Fort Casey, Washington. She attended Rainer High School. Catherine married Melvin Barney in 1930; they were married for 25 years. After his death, she married Henry Schmidt in Spokane, Washington; he passed away in 1997. She was an avid gardener and homemaker who loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. During the 1960s, she worked in retail clothing in Olympia. Catherine is survived by sons, George Barney (Marilyn) and John Barney (Joanne) of Olympia; stepson, Henry Schmidt, Jr. of Spokane; daughter, Barbara Carey (Harold) of Tahuya, Washington; sisters Agnes Fuller of Olympia and Margaret Freeze of California; 13 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.
