Charlotte Anne Montgomery (Sharp) was born in Austin Texas on Oct. 6, 1934 to Charles Martin Sharp and Sallie Bernice Dixon. Charlotte went home to heaven to be with those that preceded her in death on Apr. 23, 2013. Charlotte was the second daughter born to her mother who had already been married several times. Her mother was quite the partier and it set the stage for Charlotte’s life and the way she would be. Her mother was to busy to set about raising her daughters so they lived with…whom ever. Charlotte once made a list of those that she could remember living with until the age of 7…there were nine different people she lived with, only a few of those were any relation to her. One of those people was an older gentleman that she called ‘Uncle Tige’, she liked to tell stories of living with him when very young on a river some where. He had a very large old dog that was her protector, and saved her from a water moccasin once by knocking her into a cactus bed. She lived with someone named ‘Ma Shatto’, a woman named ‘Karen’, her father & stepmother, an ‘uncle Walter & Aunt Tanina’, a couple named ‘Bobbie & Hortace’, a couple named ‘Richard & Nina’, a set of Step Grandparents, and her grandfather Clayton Dixon whom she loved dearly until he died when she was 7 years old in 1942. At this point her mother had been married 5 to 8 times already and she was not getting any younger, so she picked Charlotte up one day for a weekend visit, went and got her other daughter and boarded a train to Southern California. Her mother went to work at the Long Beach naval shipyards building ships and Charlotte and her sister spent their time while not in school getting into all kinds of mischief. Charlotte’s mother finally met a good man, married for the last time and set about trying to become the mother she should have been all along…too late Charlotte was a head strong wild child and there was no bringing her back to normal. Charlotte’s first marriage was right out of high school; her mother had that one annulled so quickly the ink wasn’t dry on the marriage certificate. The second marriage was to Dennis Fay and that lasted only long enough to produce one daughter Sally Denise Fay. Charlotte’s next marriage was to Joe Joy, that marriage didn’t last long either, she had two children – Laura Jean Joy and Joseph Shannon Joy. Charlotte had been married 3 times, had three children and was only 23 years old. It was time to party, which got her children taken away! Charlotte started working as a cocktail waitress and did really well at it, she enjoyed the work and atmosphere…plus it was a place to meet more husbands. Next came Marlowe Roberts an artist and guitar player in a band, two more sons, Steven Lance Roberts and Gary Shane Roberts and that marriage ended. Charlotte by now was in her early thirties and wasn’t getting any younger. She got back one child that was taken away 4 years earlier and that gave her a built-in babysitter…time to party again. There was a fireman that she married, but his name has been lost to memory, there were no children and he didn’t stay around long at all…smart man. Her next marriage was to Steve Matus, a Navy man. He was 10 years younger and really into the 60’s party scene. He had a boat load of friends that thought our home was the party pad and place to be. They packed up what would fit in a car and moved us to Reno Nevada, where Charlotte would acquire her life long love of gambling. He turned out to be the worse one yet and one child later Thomas Tracy Matus, with another on the way - Misty Renee Matus - that marriage ended when he went to prison. Charlotte moved back to Southern California and met a gentleman named Ed Grimes. Ed didn’t marry Charlotte but they became ‘good friends’. It was at this time that all of Charlotte’s children were taken away by the state again and she would never get them back all except one. They remembered her for the most part but most never forgave her for the life they had lived. A couple were adopted by a good family and lead normal lives, some went with fathers and one went into the foster system. Charlotte stayed with Ed for a while and that’s how Mark Edward Grimes came to be! Still Ed wouldn’t marry her, so she set her course on finding another husband. Next came another very young Navy man, Joe Resee - he was 15 years younger and pretty gullible. This produced Charlotte’s last child – Stacey Christine Resee. At this point they moved to Tacoma, WA and Charlotte loved it here and decided to stay. Less than a year later Stacey passed away and that marriage started the long slide into divorce. It took several years but the marriage died when Stacey did. Next was Gene Sweat, he died not long after in an auto accident. Now came George Montgomery, he also was a bit younger. That marriage lasted about three years, he liked to go fishing a lot but never took his poles or tackle box. Last came Michael Harvey, he was younger also by 12 years. That marriage seemed to take…at long last. It lasted for over 20 years until Charlotte retired but it was then that he decided he wanted a younger woman and that marriage went down the tubes. When they divorced Charlotte lost her home and all that went with it, she started living with her second daughter and stayed with her until she got ill and had to go into assisted living. There Charlotte once again came to life, made friends, went places and again met a younger man, he was 26 years younger. Charlotte enjoyed their time together; going to the casino’s going to the thrift stores and just hanging out….he made her smile right up until - the end. Her perfect job would have been as a NICU nurse. She could have cared for all the babies anyone could ever want. Her favorite color was blue. She loved blue glass…didn’t matter what, ashtrays, bowls, drinking glasses…as long as it was blue! Her favorite flower was gladiolus, she liked other flowers but her favorite was always gladiolus. She thought roses where beautiful but reminded her of funerals…she hated marigolds…she said they stank! One of her favorite sayings was ‘I’m old….just please me!’ I think that some form of that saying has always been her motto….and it always ended with ‘Just please me’. She was always a lady, and comported herself as such. She may have liked the men but she was always a lady while liking them. She loved the chase but once they caught her, she wanted another. Charlotte loved the casinos…boy did she ever! She loved playing all kinds of games, yahtzee, aggravation and specially card games. She would play cards for hours and hours, she loved playing poker, army rummy and spades. She loved to go fishing off the pier, she had a boat for a while and would spend all the time she could out fishing. She may have been a lousy mother but she was a great Grandma, and loved her grandchildren. Charlotte was always looking to get rich quick, looking for that big score at the thrift store or with her metal detector. Charlotte believed in God, but not in organized religion or church. She is now in heaven to be with God, her parents, her daughter Stacey, Granddaughter Amy and great granddaughter Ashlynn Paige. I’m sure they are having a grand time up there together, Mother telling them all kinds of stories about all of her adventures in life…making them smile and giggle…it would be nice to see them all walking through heaven together.
