Robert Dean Pollock A true Tacoma Classic (“Bob”, “Bobby”, “Bubba”, “Scrap Daddy”) Robert was born in Tacoma, Washington on August 13, 1942 and passed away on January 13, 2014 at the age of 71 at his home surrounded by loved ones. A lifelong resident of the Tacoma area, Robert was raised in the North End, he attended Sherman Elementary, Mason Junior High and Wilson High School, graduating in 1960. He also attended Bates and University of Puget Sound before beginning his career in the Scrap Metal Industry which led to the creation of his own thriving company, Tacoma Metals, Inc. Robert was the son of the late Herbert and Ethel Pollock. He is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Marie (Quinn) Pollock who he married on August 23, 1969. He is also survived by his daughter, Monica Mariam (Fitch) Miller (Rick Miller); his granddaughter, Macy Quinn Pollock; his great granddaughter, Lia Marie Kilcup; his brothers, Steven Pollock (Catherine) of California; and Lance Pollock (Pam) of Tacoma; nieces Andrea and Teresa Pollock, his sister-in-law Shirley Dashiell, and many more adoring nieces and nephews. As a young man, Bob was a boy scout, played the bugle, and was very interested in cars. He was a member of the Torquers Hot Rod Club, many of those members were still his dear friends through the years. His interest in hot rods never died, but evolved into an interest in antique cars. Bob was a collector. He had a 1914 Model T, a 1933 Ford Coupe-which he re-built himself, and a 1938 Packard. He was also an active member of the local Model T Club. Bob had many interests in addition to cars. He was very knowledgeable about all things antique. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Sheila, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, South America but he especially liked England. He had several collections train sets, hats, books, magazines, and various brass items, just to name just a few. He enjoyed Poker with the same group of men for over 40 years. He loved to watch television shows about antiques and travel, he liked to play along watching Jeopardy and looked forward to many British programs on PBS with his wife, Sheila. Bob, was a true classic. He was highly intelligent, and had a fantastic memory. Many people referred to him as a walking dictionary. He was a teacher and role model to many in the scrap metal industry. Bob was known for his integrity and respected for his business savvy, not only locally, but around the country. He was naturally easy going and almost no one can say that they ever saw him angry or stressed. He deeply appreciated good quality and had an amazing knack for finding treasures. Bob was meticulously neat and took delicate care of his belongings. Bob was humble and always a true gentleman. By looking at him, how he dressed, what he drove- you would never know that he was so successful, he had no need to show off or put on heirs. Bob’s keen sense of humor, contagious laugh and warm smile will always be remembered fondly and missed greatly. He was adored by many, and his legacy will carry on with his business and through his loved ones and all of the life lessons he taught them by his wonderful example. He was and will continue to be an inspiration to us all. Special thanks to Betsy Biggs Pepper and Morgan Biggs for the loving and special care they have given both Robert and Sheila these past few months. A Celebration of Life will be held in honor of Robert on Thursday, January 23rd at 5:00 pm at Historic 1625 Tacoma Place at 1625 South Tacoma Way. Donations may be made to the March of Dimes.
