Charles R. Thompson

No visitation Charles R. Thompson, Jr. M.D. Charles R. Thompson, Jr. M.D. went home to be with our Lord Jesus surrounded by his family at home on August 25, 2007. Chuck was born to Ray and Jessie Thompson on February 24, 1929 in West Plains, Missouri. He was born and raised on a farm surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins that he dearly loved. Dr. Thompson graduated from West Plains High School in 1947 and served in the United States Army from 1947 through 1948. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Drury College, Springfield, Missouri in 1952 and received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee in 1956. During his internship and residency, where he served as chief resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, he met his future wife, Carol Ann Whitney, a nursing student. They married June 17, 1961 in Dearborn, Michigan. Dr. Thompson was a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Washington State Medical Association and Grays Harbor Medical Society. He was a Fellow with the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was a surgeon in Seattle from 1961 – 1972. He began private practice in Aberdeen in 1967 and retired in 1994. Dr. Thompson mastered the art and science of medicine. He truly loved his patients. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church, the University of Washington Alumni Association and Tyee Club. He loved Husky football and was a ticket holder for 45 years. Chuck leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Carol; his four children, Leslie Thompson Gruginski (Larry), Lisa Thompson Jones (Jack), Charles W. Thompson, Paige Thompson Hopfer (Eric); five grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Nicole, Zachary and Kjirstin; brother, Bob Thompson; sister, Pat Rouintree; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. Chuck will be always remembered for his honesty, kindness, sense of humor, charm, compassion and generosity to others and the love of a good meal. He was a devoted son, loving husband and father, adoring grandfather (“Papa”) and admired friend. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Westwood Baptist Church, 333 Kaiser Road NW, Olympia, Washington. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Salvation Army or Providence SoundHomeCare and Hospice, PO Box 5008, Lacey WA 98509. A special thank-you to Dr. William Brennan and his staff.
