Silas Newton Hiott
July 11th, 1918 - March 21st, 2015
Silas Newton Hiott (Stan) Born 7-11-1918 in Walterboro, S.C.; passed peacefully 3-21-2015, due to natural causes. He was a decorated WWII Veteran, retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and retired U.S. Civil Service as an electrician at Fort Lewis. Stan served on Aircraft carriers including the USS Oriskany, USS Lexington, and the USS Hornet during the Doolittle Raids on Tokyo including when the USS Hornet was sunk by Japanese torpedo and kamikaze attacks in the “Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands” on 27 October 1942. He loved to work on electrical appliances, TVs, radios –anything he could do to help out family and friends as well as those in the surrounding community. Stan will also be remembered for his avid gardening, particularly with the harvests of fresh tomatoes that he happily shared with his friends and family. His yard was always impeccably manicured and full of colorful flowers when the season permitted. He loved his pet Boston Terriers as he did his own family. Silas is preceded in death by his wife Irene P. Hiott (m. Sabol). He is survived by his son Ronald S. Hiott of Prineville, OR.; daughters Theresa D. Hiott-Smith of University Place, WA and Carol Smith (m. Hiott) of Puyallup, WA. We will miss his keen wit, sense of humor, engineering mind and most of all his tremendous gardening skills.
