Brian Everett Scharber
August 14th, 1964 - May 10th, 2017
Brian Everett Scharber passed away of complications from an infection arising during his treatment journey for multiple myeloma on May 10, 2017 in Seattle, Washington. He was 52. A resident of Olympia since 2006, over the years he also lived in Rochester and Tenino. Brian was born August 14, 1964 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1967, his family moved to Puyallup, Washington. He graduated from Tenino High School in 1983, and earned an AA degree in Electronic Technology from South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Washington. He worked for Capital Business Machines (1985-2000), and the City of Tumwater (2000 to 2017) where he was Information Services Manager beginning in 2005. He was a member of the Association of County and City Information Systems (ACCIS) where he once served as treasurer. Brian was married to Teresa Sharp from 1985 to 1992. Born to this union was a proud son, Cody Austin Scharber. On August 5, 2008, he married Kris Fjalstad in Las Vegas, Nevada. Brian was a skillful craftsman and loved building things, including peaceful water features for his home. In addition, he loved cars and particularly the classics, meticulously cleaning and maintaining his truck and cars, and was rebuilding a 1966 Ford Fairlane. A tractor purchase in recent years opened a whole new range of project possibilities, and he spent countless hours aboard the tractor. Brian was an enthusiastic singer and, although the opportunities were spread few and far between, he loved a good karaoke event with friends. Strong willed and opinionated, Brian loved his wife, his family and his friends. He did all he could to shelter and protect those around him. Brian was a determined dad, who treasured his boy Cody. He wasn’t one for lots of words but he was earnest in his love and proud to see the man Cody has become. During Brian’s last days, he lay witness to the compassion and protective measures of a son for his dad – exhibiting qualities that Brian himself valued so highly. Brian demonstrated his love more than he spoke about it. His wife Kris remembers him sitting bolt upright on the beach, watching her snorkel in Hawaii. While Brian was unable to swim, that didn’t stop him from watching her like a hawk. Although he couldn’t be with her in the water, he loved her and he needed to ensure she was always safe. Brian was the friend you wanted in your corner. He was happiest when he was helping others and was always generous with his time. Brian was the guy who checked-in after the storm, who volunteered to cut firewood, and arrived with the ladder when you needed a helping hand. When his best friend was diagnosed with ALS in 2002, he supported the family with love, support, and lots of chores through those dark days. That is the kind of guy Brian was. He loved his wife, his son, his family, his friends, his co-workers and his faith. He was happiest when he was helping others. The family offers sincerest gratitude to Dr. David Coffey at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and the team at Vista in Olympia for supporting Brian through his care. We offer thanks also to the ICU Oncology Team at the University of Washington Medical Center who helped him through his last hours. Brian is survived by his wife, Kris Scharber of Olympia; son, Cody Scharber of Tenino; father, Lyle Scharber; brothers, Keith Scharber and Ron Scharber of Rochester, and Scott Scharber of Olympia; and sister, Cheryl Conklin, of Olympia. He also leaves behind his feline companion, Gnush, the “Little Prince” that Brian openly acknowledged had complete control over him. His mother, Helen (Goakey) Kennedy, passed away on May 12, 2017, two days after Brian’s death. Please leave memories of Brian or condolences for his family in the Guestbook below.
