Funeral Alternatives of Washington - Tumwater
Robert Charles Sauls
March 11th, 1935 - May 13th, 2017
Dr. Robert Charles Sauls, age 82, passed away at his home in Olympia, Washington on May 13, 2017. Bob was born on March 11, 1935, to Theodor Sauls and Edith (Simmons) Sauls in Olympia. He graduated from Olympia High School in 1953 and joined the U.S. Navy where he was in active duty from 1954 to1956. After the Navy, he attended college at the University of Washington and later graduated from the School of Dentistry at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He met his wife, Evangeline Schumacher, in Milwaukee and they married on August 4, 1962. In 1963, Bob and Evie moved to Lacy, Washington where they raised their family and where Bob began his dental practice with his brother Don. Bob and Don continued a successful dental practice together for 31 years. In 1972, the family moved to Olympia, on Johnson Point, where they raised their family and lived for the next 45 years. Bob had many interests and loves through the years: flying, fishing, hunting, golfing with friends, BBQs, cooking, pets, travelling and art. He loved fishing in the San Juan Islands and weekending at his place on Orcas Island. Always social, he made lifelong friends as a member of the Olympia GYRO club, which he was a member for the past 48 years. After retirement, Bob took up wood turning, a self-taught hobby turning wood into bowls. This passion turned full-time and he became a vendor at the Olympia Farmers Market for many years. He was also an active member of the Olympia Wood Turners Association. He loved the Farmers Market and always looked forward to “going to work,” readily making those people his close friends. Bob loved his wife, his three children and his grandchildren. He was always the first in the pool with his grandkids and they loved how he spoiled them. He always said being a grandpa gave him a “hall-pass” to spoil. Those who knew Bob, knew he loved to cook and he enjoyed comparing recipes with his daughter Lisa, through the years. He was an extremely proud father of his twin sons, who became ship captains in the Merchant Marine. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Evangeline; sons, Captain Keith Sauls and Captain Kevin Sauls; his daughter, Lisa (William) Vipond of Issaquah; his grandchildren, Will, Lucas and Carolyn; his nephews, Rusty Sauls and Scott Sauls of Olympia; and his cousin, Robert Hoppe (Donna) of Port Townsend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Edith Sauls; his brother, Donald; and sister-in-law, Joy Sauls. Please leave memories of Bob or condolences for his family in the Guestbook below.
