Joseph Frank Hennig was born in Chicago, IL to Joseph & Gertrude Hennig on September 26, 1932. When he was twelve years old Bud, (Joe's family nickname) moved with his parents and younger brother, Ralph, to Seattle WA while his father was stationed with the Navy during WWII. He met Betty Mettler at Beacon Lutheran Church in Seattle and after a wonderful courtship they were married in 1954. Their first of eight children, Dave, arrived a year later while Joe was attending Concordia College in Seward, NB. In 1956 they moved to Marengo, IL where he taught at Zion Lutheran School, and five of their next seven children were born; Dan, Doug, Bettie Jo, John & Jim. In 1964 the Hennig family moved to LaGrange Park, Illinois after Joe accepted a call to St. John Lutheran School, and the last of children, Bonnie Jean and Roberta Ann were born. Joe then went on to teach two years at Luther North High School in Chicago, and 18 years at Rockford Lutheran High School in Rockford, Illinois. Joe finished his educational career as the Principal at Immanuel Lutheran School in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he retired from teaching in 1994. Bud continued to work for the LCMS as a vacancy pastor for 6 years and then took a role in LCEF, where he continued to work until his health forced him to retire for good in 2011. In the fall of 2012, Joe and Betty returned to the Puget Sound area, where they settled in University Place, just a few miles from their daughter Bonnie Jean. Joseph was called home to be with his Savior on Sunday April 28th. In their retirement, Bud and Betty loved to travel and visit their children, grandchildren (19), and even 1 great grandchild, with another on the way! Among the many places they visited were; New Zealand, Australia, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, Austria, England, and the Scandinavian capitals. Bud liked the outdoors, spent many hours gardening, and walking and hiking with his beloved wife Betty. We thank God for the exceptional gift of Joseph Frank Hennig!
