Charles "Pete" Guthrie
August 28th, 1939 - January 22nd, 2015
Born August 28, 1939 in Cumberland, Maryland. Died January 22, 2015 in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from Bruce High School in 1957 in Westernport, Maryland. He served in the United States Airforce from 1957 to 1961. He met his late wife Sharon Guthrie Clark (deceased) and settled down in Tacoma, Washington. He is survived by his longtime girlfriend Barbara Montgomery and his children, Joan Turnbull, Edward Guthrie and Jean Guthrie plus 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Pete worked professionally as an engraver and a pressman foreman. Played softball and soccer in high school. He played softball from 1958-1993. Averaged 20 wins a year and won at least 75% of the over 1300 games he pitched. Pete had a good career playing softball while serving in the Air Force in 1959. They took second place in the ADC tournaments after winning the WDAF and 25th Air Division tournaments and Pete pitched six games back-to-back, coming from the loser’s bracket to win the next four before losing in the finals, 2-1. That season Pete racked up 41 wins. He pitched for St. Regis, McKinley Hill Merchants, Lutheran Merchants of Puyallup. Manitou Fuel, Bud’s Corner Tavern, Cloverleaf Tavern and B&I Sports. He was a good hitter and played the outfield and DH’d when not pitching. While with Bud’s they won the City League championship and tied for the championship another year. He tossed numerous no-hitters and one-hitters but can’t remember how many. A highlight was striking out 22 batters in a seven-inning game. His #1 coach was Bill Potthoff, the pitching preacher. He was a pretty good hitter but was blinded in his left eye in 1960 and his home run production went down at that point. He had a tendon cut in his pitching arm in 1963 and had to re-learn how to pitch and throw a riseball, curve, drop and three different change-ups. Pete’s #1 favorite dog Rusty stole his heart. When asked how he wanted to be remembered when he died, he said “Remember me as just a good old boy.” Memorial Service to be held 10AM, Tuesday, February 10th at Tahoma National Cemetery.
