Scott Clyde Smith Miller
May 1st, 1938 - January 20th, 2014
Scott Clyde Smith Miller A truly beloved friend of Tacoma, Scott Miller was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 1,1938, and died in his home in Tacoma, Washington on January 20, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Chaffee, his son, Reuben Lorch-Miller and Reuben's life partner Laura Splan (Brooklyn, NY), his sisters Celeste Kromfals and Beverly Nichols (both of Aloha, OR) and many extended family and friends. Living his life with love, joy, Orthodox Christianity, and a commitment to social justice, Scott also chose avenues of creative self-expression through gardening and through the arts, especially song, dance and photography. Scott was a mental health therapist for children and older adults for 20 years, and retired from work life as a tour director for Grand Circle Travel. In his retirement, his commitment of time and heart was given to teaching citizenship for Tacoma Community House and performing annually in the Puget Sound Revels. His love of the outdoors and his sense of adventure included being active in bicycling, kayaking, hiking and camping. Scott will be greatly missed and forever cherished by his family, friends and community. May we all carry forward his deep love of life as a blessed gift. A 40-day memorial will be held at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church on Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. A pot luck dinner and a service of musical and poetic blessings for Scott will follow in the parish hall. If you wish, you may contribute to Tacoma Community House in Scott’s memory.
