Sumner G. Merrill, 73, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte. Sumner was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 4, 1940 to Sumner and Katherine (nee O'Roak) Merrill. He served in the United States Navy and after his discharge worked for Texas Instruments for 23 years. After moving to Florida in 1988, he was employed by the Charlotte County School Board as an Electrician and retired in 2001. He was known to his family as "Pop-Pop" and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him. Sumner is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Patricia Merrill; his children, Ernest (Elizabeth) Sturges Jr., Kellee (Darren) Anderson, all of Port Charlotte, Sumner (Lynn) Merrill Jr., Paul Merrill, and Lynn Ann Merrill of Massachusetts; and 5 grandchildren. The Family will receive friends from 5-7:00PM on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 12687 SW County Road 769 (Kings Highway) in Lake Suzy. A private funeral service and committal service with military honors will be held at the convenience of the family.
