August 25th, 1919 - July 3rd, 2016
Asta Elsa Newton of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 3, 2016 at the Hospice in Arcadia, Florida. She was born August 25, 1919 in Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands, but lived in St. Thomas, USVI most of her life. Asta graduated from Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She worked as a nurse in New York, the Department of Public Health in St. Thomas, and the Department of Education as a school nurse in St. Thomas USVI before she retired. She moved to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1991. She was a loving and hard working mother, grandmother and foster Mom to many. She is survived by her sons, Franklin Newton and Fred Newton of Florida; daughters, Florise Newton Chow of Georgia, Ida Scantlebury of New York, and Jean Marie Nickie and Barbara Julien of Florida. She is also survived by her sister, Irene Vanterpool of Port Charlotte, Florida and brother, Pedro Chinnery of Melbourne, Florida; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on July 16, 2016 at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery, 9400 Indian Spring Cemetery Rd., Punta Gorda, Florida 33950. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to noon and the service will start at 12:00 noon.
