John "Jack" Powers Moore
June 22nd, 1923 - August 31st, 2018
John “Jack” Powers Moore died on August 31, 2018. Jack was born June 22, 1923, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the older of two children born to Jack and Ada (Townley) Moore. Jack graduated from the McDonogh School in May 1942. He worked briefly as a clerk typist for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. On November 18, 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. After the war, Jack became a U.S. Naval Reserve officer, rising to the rank of Captain. Jack retired from the U.S. Navy in 1983. In 1945, Jack married Kathleen “Kassie” Faubion and started college at Johns Hopkins University. The couple moved to California where Jack received his Bachelor’s degree in Business from the UCLA. Jack worked for Burroughs and Kaiser Steel. Jack and Kassie had three children, Willow, Deborah, and Jamie. In 1958, the family moved to Bellevue, Washington. The family enjoyed summers at Hood Canal, which was where Jack first honed his deck building skills. Jack and Kassie’s marriage ended in dissolution. In July, 1974, Jack met Maxine “Maggie” Frank Wells at a Unitarian Church Family Camp in Mendocino, California. They were married in December 1975, and lived in Rancho Palos Verdes, Santa Clara, and Los Gatos before settling in Aptos, California. They travelled the world together and built a lovely home overlooking the ocean. The Aptos home presented Jack with the opportunity to further develop his deck building skills as he constructed what was known to the family as the “Winchester mystery” deck. Jack and Maggie shared a love of Shakespeare, and enjoyed annual trips to see plays in Ashland. Jack frequently remarked on his physical resemblance to JFK, Henry Fonda, Andy Williams and Coach Bill Walsh of the San Francisco 49ers. Woe to those who disagreed. Jack spent nearly 30 years as a tax consultant with his own firm, Goodwin Moore Tax Service, in Campbell, California, and later in Scotts Valley. After Jack’s retirement at the age of 83, he and Maggie moved to Washington in 2007 to be closer to family. In 2016, Jack moved to Hawthorne Place Adult Family Home, where he resided until his death. The family would like to extend their thanks and heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Jane Geraci, and to the caregivers at Hawthorne Place for their loving care of Jack. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie; his step-daughter, Ellen Wells; and his sister, Frances (Mollie) Suplee. Jack is survived by his daughters, Willow Moore of La Center, Washington, Deborah Moore (Gary) and Jamie Moore (Bill) of Olympia, Washington; step- son, Steven Wells (Julia) of Sandy, Oregon; grandchildren, Jessica, Luara, Rayne, Katherine, Luke, Karina, Tabitha, Jackson, Melody, Phillip and Victor; and great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Evan, Vanessa, Isabel, and Maija. Jack is also survived by Kassie Moore, his first wife, and by numerous nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and California. There will be a Celebration of Life, Rose Fling and Reception on Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Coach House, 221 21st Avenue, Olympia, WA 98501. Guests are invited to bring a poem or memory of Jack. Roses and coffee nips will be provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Association or the progressive cause/charity of your choice.
