Janet Elaine Marlatt
January 13th, 1926 - March 11th, 2018
Janet E. Drennan Marlatt January 13, 1926-March 11, 2018 Janet passed away peacefully on March 11, 2018 at age 92. She was born to Glen and Esther Drennan and raised in Corning, Iowa; she was the younger of two daughters. She met Darwin Marlatt at a young age and they became the love of each other’s lives while growing up living a busy life in a small mid-western town during the Great Depression. Janet attended Corning High School where she was very active in academics, sports, music, and marching band. She was a national award winning baton twirler and majorette of her high school band. Her desire to further her education and pursue her dream of becoming an educator led Janet to attend Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She was a member and President of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She completed her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska in Omaha in 1946. Janet married Darwin Marlatt in 1950. She taught high school in Omaha while Darwin finished medical school at Creighton University. They moved to Tacoma, Washington to pursue their careers. Janet was a teacher at Stadium High School where she taught business classes while Darwin started his private medical practice. Janet’s career changed paths with the arrival of her four daughters over the next several years. This turned her talent and devotion of teaching towards her family and community. Janet was active volunteering at her daughters’ schools where she participated in CYO and the PTA. She served in many roles including PTA President.Once her four daughters were off attending college and pursuing their own careers, Janet became the Office Manager at Darwin’s medical practice in Tacoma until they both retired in 1988. After retirement, Janet and Darwin traveled and enjoyed life together until Darwin’s death in May 2014. Janet loved her husband, Darwin, whom she was married to for 64 years. She considered their marriage her life’s greatest joy and the raising of her four daughters her life’s greatest accomplishment. She truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the lake and beach properties. She had many interests including shopping, travel, games, music, dancing and outdoor activities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Her memory was nothing short of amazing. She entertained us with family stories and interesting details throughout her lifetime. She was patient, kind, funny, devoted, happy—beautiful inside and out. Janet was the mom everyone wished they had. Over the last several years, Janet was able to spend a lot of quality time with her four daughters and six grandchildren. She lived a very full life filled with love. Mom, we thank you for so many wonderful memories. You will be missed. Janet E. Marlatt and Darwin A. Marlatt, MD will be resting in peace at Calvary Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington. A private family service is planned.
