Edward Charles Sampson Edward Charles Sampson “Ed” was born in Port Arthur, Texas on August 28, 1931 and passed away on August 7, 2018 at his home. He was 86 years young! Ed grew up in Port Arthur with his eight siblings to the parents of Preston and Madeline Sampson. At 18 he joined the United States Air Force as an Airman, retiring as Senior Master Sergeant with medals for good conduct, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Commendation Medal. After serving his country, Ed retired to Lakewood, Washington and went on to work for the Boeing Co. He earned his second retirement there. One of the many recognition awards from Boeing was for perfect attendance for 11 straight years! If you knew Ed, he was punctual, reliable, and committed to his responsiblities. Outside of work Ed had a number of passions- playing poker, working on cars in his garage, watching his son play youth basketball and college football. But his #1 passion was for the well being of his family and really anyone he came into contact with. Let’s look about each of them. Poker was a means to connect with people- mostly good but some antagonizing/poking too. Sampson’s are known to talk a little trash here and there ;) It was a house poker game in Southern California he met the love of his life Hatsu Sampson, his wife of 27+years. Lol. That was the one positive moment in his poker years. Haha. He enjoyed the comradirary more than winning for sure. Junk cars and fixing them- there were countless summers where the family would gather out in the garage to keep Dad company. Everyone one of us kids have spent an evening with Dad, under cars on his rolling beds (called creepers) holding the work-light for him. We’d hear the door to the garage close and he’s come in and ask “can someone come hold the light for me?” We’d go running out! Those were the best summer nights. In 1994 he retired from Boeing, bought a motorhome, and traveled across the country to watch Ed Jr play college football for BYU. They drove to see the Notre Dame game in Indiana, ASU in Arizona, Fresno CA, and countless trips to Provo for home games. Those were really the last years Ed and Sue traveled and definitley some of the best times for them together. If you knew Ed, he was from the old school. He and mom in all those years would rarely mention the idea of going out for food, a movie, or any entertainment. They’re entertainment and whole life was being together with family and friends at the house. We spent all our time in our kitchen just talking and laughing. Lastly, till the very end of Ed’s life he was committed on every occasion to sharing his wisdom and life experiences to better our lives. It would be hard to say which was bigger- Ed’s heart or the amount of knowledge/wisdom he had stored away. But we as a family can all agree one thing, he did his damdest to share all of it with us to better our lives. Each one of are better for it. Each one of us appreciate it. And we all will miss our Father, our Dad, Ed. Rest in peace Dad. We love you.
