Terry Melvin Humphrey
August 11th, 1948 - February 17th, 2020
Olympia area resident, Terry Melvin Humphrey, 71, passed away on February 17, 2020 at Tacoma General Hospital as a result of complications from a stroke. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Faith Lutheran Church, 7075 Pacific Ave. SE, Lacey, WA 98503, with reception to follow. Terry was born August 11, 1948, to Melvin and Betty (Pigman) Humphrey in Helena, Montana. He was raised in Helena and graduated high school there in 1966. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served until he was medically retired as a Petty Officer Second Class on October 29, 1970. Upon his retirement, Terry went to college, where he earned two associates degrees in computer programming and business. He started a career in computer programming with Cowlitz County in 1976, and retired from Grays Harbor County in 2001, after 22 years. He met his wife, Sharon, in 1976, but it wasn’t until 15 years later that they reconnected and married on August 15, 1992 in Kelso, Washington. Terry had many passions but few rivaled his love of sports, silver coins, and bragging about his children and grandchildren. He loved his Seattle Seahawks and could often be heard yelling at the refs, even though they couldn’t hear him through the TV. He could tell you the numismatic value of a 1925 Standing Liberty Quarter just by looking at it. And if you were around him more than five minutes, you knew all about his children and grandchildren. He also loved playing card games and everyone knew they had to pay close attention or he would try to “sneak” an extra card or point. Additionally, Terry loved being around his family for holidays, birthdays or reunions; wherever there was laughter, Terry was sure to be at the center of it. Terry was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and son, who was undoubtedly the most gregarious person at any social or family gathering. He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Olympia, Washington; son, Chad (Rachel) Humphrey and grandson (Gage) of San Antonio, Texas; daughters, Heidi (Chad) Gray and grandchildren (Dillon and Makenna) of Lancaster, California, and Audrea (David) Bighaus and grandchildren (Ashley, Isaac and Rachel) of Rainer, Oregon; stepdaughters, Jennifer (DeAngelo) Bache and grandchildren (Eric, Alex, Zac and Sammy) of Lacey, and Nicole Chapman and grandchildren (Joseph and Sophia) of Olympia; parents, Melvin and Betty Humphrey of Beaverton, Oregon; sisters, Diane (Mike) Brook of Mesa, Arizona, and Kristi (Todd) Barth of Beaverton, Oregon; brother, Thad (Wendy) Humphrey of Tigard, Oregon. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Humphrey; and brother, Tim Humphrey. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Terry’s honor are suggested for the Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd., Suite 102, PMB 609, Oceanside, CA 92057 or https://semperfifund.org/donate/. Please leave condolences or share memories and photos on the Tribute Wall to the left. NO FLOWERS PLEASE.
