Funeral Alternatives of Washington - Tumwater
Edward "Pops" Greig Hornor
September 24th, 1944 - July 29th, 2021
Lt. Col. Edward Greig “Pops” Hornor, Ret. was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, on September 24, 1944, to Army Air Corps pilot Carl “Bud” and Katye Allman Hornor. He was the oldest of five boys and one girl. At one time, Bud was stationed at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, and Pops attended school in Papillion. Later, his own children would attend the same schools when he, himself, was stationed at Offutt. Pops graduated from Cupertino High School in California, and then Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where he played basketball and baseball. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. It was there that he met his wife, Anne Hall, a student from Kodiak, Alaska. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1966, and was a B-52 navigator, stationed at Wurtsmith AFB, Michigan. His first crew won the Blue Steel Trophy in a SAC/RAF Bombing Competition in England. He went Arc Light to Guam and Utapao, Thailand, in 1970. When he returned, he decided to stay in the Air Force, and attended pilot school at Vance AFB, Oklahoma. From 1972 to 1978, he was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, where he flew EC-135s. During that time, he spent TDY tours in Athens, Greece; Mildenhall, England; Eilson AFB, Alaska; and Kadena, Japan. He also had a year-long remote tour of duty in Osan, South Korea. He retired in 1989, after almost 23 years in the Air Force. He loved to fly and always said he never worked a day in his life! In 1993, Pops and Annie moved to western Washington. They lived on Camano Island, in Spokane and finally in Port Angeles. They loved their friends and family. While in Southeast Asia, Pops was exposed to Agent Orange and, on Thursday, July 29, 2021, Pops passed away from the effects of Parkinson’s Disease with Lewy Body Dementia, and Diabetes. He is survived by his wife, Anne; daughter, Hillary Hornor; son, Andrew Hornor; daughter, Jaimee-Kate (John) Hall; grandsons, USAF Capt. Ethan (Teasa) McMahon, Rett (Allie) McMahon, Daniel Hornor, Joseoph Hornor; granddaughter, Katy McMahon; great-granddaughter, Marci McMahon; and great-grandson, Liam McMahon. Lt. Col. Edward Greig “Pops” Hornor, Ret. will be laid to rest with full military honors in the near future at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. His parents are interred there also. As so beautifully written by John Gillespie McGee, Jr., he has “slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;…trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out his hand and touched the face of God.” “Rest in peace, my best friend. Thank you for choosing me. I will keep the watch. Love, your Annie.” Please leave condolences or share memories and photos on the Tribute Wall to the left.
