Joy Elaine Hurlbert

Joy Elaine Hurlbert passed away October 25, 2021, in Olympia, Washington. She was born November 23, 1935, to Ralph and Rose Holdiman in Anchorage, Alaska. Joy graduated in 1953 from Auburn High School, in Auburn, Washington, and earned a BS in Bacteriology and Public Health in 1958 from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. She attended Sacred Heart Hospital School of Medical Technology (1962-1963) in Spokane, Washington. She married Roy Donald Hurlbert on May 31, 1957, in Pullman. Professionally, Joy was a medical technologist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Washington (1963-1967); Shelton General Hospital (October 1967-October 1968); and Mason General Hospital in Shelton, Washington (October 1968-June 1996). She loved gardening and flower arranging. She belonged to Ikebana International and was past president of the Tacoma-Olympia Chapter; and the American Rhododendron Society, where she was treasurer of the Shelton Chapter. Joy is survived by daughters, Mary Settle and Lisa Lahaie; grandchildren, Andrew Settle, Katelyn Williams, Daniel Lahaie, and Lianne Lahaie; two great-grandchildren, Riley Williams and Carter Williams; brother, David Holdiman of Anchorage;and dog, KadieSue. She was predeceased by her husband, R. Don Hurlbert; son, Jon R. Hurlbert; and sister, Sally Larimore. Memorial donations may be made to Mason General Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund; or WSU Foundation, General Scholarship Fund.
