Roberta "Berta" Lynn Grindeland
July 6th, 1955 - February 27th, 2024
Roberta “Berta” Grindeland passed away peacefully at age 68 in University Place, WA. She was born in Fargo, ND, the third of five children, to Robert and Adeline Grindeland. In 1964 the family moved to Vancouver, WA, but following the death of her father, returned to ND. She graduated from Bismarck Jr. College in 1978 with a degree in Graphic Art Design and returned to Vancouver, starting her art career at The Columbian newspaper. She was a talented artist known for her passion for portraits and oil painting. She leaves behind a legacy of beautiful artwork created in her home art studio. In 1984 Berta gave birth to her daughter Tess Ann, telling her often “You are my best work of art.” The two shared a loving lifelong bond. In 2007 Berta moved back to Hatton, ND. She remained there until 2017, when she moved to Tacoma, WA to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Michael. Tess provided devoted care for her mother until early 2023 when Berta was placed in an adult family home for 24/7 care. A breast cancer survivor, Berta was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and dementia in 2021. She is survived by her daughter Tess and son-in-law Michael, sisters Joy and Mary, brothers John and Scott, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She will be deeply missed. There will be no funeral. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please contact Tess for more information at [email protected].
