WWII D-Day Survivor Passes Douglas Elwood Scott (“Scotty”) age 99, of Spanaway, WA peacefully went to meet his Lord on Sunday, February 7, 2021. He was born in Chehalis, WA on October 9, 1921 to Douglas Scott and Violet Bambarger. He lived his early years in PeEll, WA and could remember when the first talking movies came out in theaters. During the Great Depression he moved to Puyallup to live with his grandma. As a child in Puyallup, he often played at his childhood friend’s home—his friend who many years later became his wife. At age 14, he got a job helping to build the Grand Coulee Dam. After being drafted in the Army, he was assigned to Company B, 149th Amphibious Engineers Battalion and his battalion landed at Normandy on D-Day. Following D-Day, his unit continued through France and Germany and were part of the first groups to meet the Russians at the Elbe River. Douglas was reacquainted with Elizabeth after returning from WWII, and married August 9, 1947. Douglas drove trucks and then worked as a shipping/receiving clerk for Darigold for 28 years. Following retirement, he worked at the Puyallup Fair for nearly 30 years, and for most of those years he and his wife joined their friends as South Hill Mall Walkers. His wife preceded him in death as did his parents, sister Betty Blakley, as well as grandsons David English and Eric Conant. Douglas is survived by his sons, William (Lucy), Kenneth, Douglas (Debbie), Stephen (Marty), Joseph (Marcy), and daughters Sherry Criss (Tim) and Christine English (David) as well as 24 grandchildren, 62 great and 22 great-great grandchildren. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family memorial service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery. Please share memories and condolences here on this page.
