Manton Dale Corbin
Manton Dale Corbin, 85, passed away at home with family at his side on September 14, 2014 in Lacey, Washington. He was born March 29, 1929 to Lewis Clark Corbin and Ida Mary (Grunwald) Corbin in Wenatchee, Washington. Dale grew up on an apple orchard in Manson, WA, and graduated from Chelan High School in 1946 and began college at Washington State University. He served as a cryptographer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was stationed in France. After his service, he returned to WSU where, in 1955, he earned a BA degree in Forestry/Agriculture. During this time, he met Shirley Rae Spurgeon and they were married on September 25, 1955 in Pullman, Washington. They moved to Ellensburg for the beginning of his career with the Department of Natural Resources. Their daughter, Lou Ann was born there. Dale was transferred to Newport, WA, where daughter, Teresa Rae was born. In 1960, their final move was to Olympia where their third daughter, Phyllis Dale, was born. When Dale had worked for DNR as a forester and cartographer for 25 years, he transferred to the Department of Labor and Industries as a safety inspector for a few years before retiring. Because he needed something to do, he sold shoes in the Red Wing Shoe Store for 17 years. He had a heart attack in 1990 and had to stop working but, as he recovered, he looked for something else to do and went to Hawks Prairie Casino and worked in soft count. Dale had a brain full of jokes and funny stories and loved to make people laugh. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He loved to sing barbershop harmony and started a local group with the help of several men in Tacoma. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching sports. He was very proud of his girls and became Rainbow Dad for the Assembly numerous times. Dale and Rae were longtime members of St. Andrew’s Methodist Church and the St. Mark Lutheran Church. Dale also was Past Master of Harmony Lodge No. 18 F&AM, in Olympia. He is survived by daughters, Lou Ann Strand, Teresa Rae Fowlkes and Phyllis Dale Martinez, all of Olympia; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Providence SoundHomeCare and Hospice. Please leave memories of Dale or condolences for his family in the Guestbook below.
