Johnny Joe Austin

Johnny Joe Austin, 66, of Olympia, Washington, passed away November 10, 2017, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Johnny was born in Amarillo, Texas on May 15, 1951 to Callie Marie Heard and Johnny Joe Counts. Johnny had a 29-year career in the Army and continued to serve as a civilian at Joint Base Lewis-McChord until his passing. The testaments of a few whom he touched are examples of the man he was: “My friend, my mentor. A soldier’s soldier, a great leader, the epitome of the term NCO.” “Today we lost a great Soldier, leader, husband, father, grandfather.” “He made me a better soldier. I am glad I had the privilege to serve under him and his leadership.” Johnny was preceded in death by his step-father and mentor, Doyle G. Roberts; mother, Marie; beloved wife, Frankie D. Austin; and brother, Daniel Austin. He is survived by his sister, Deborah Simonis; three daughters, Melissa Austin, Amanda Gillis, and Jennifer Harlan; two sons-in-law, Malcom Gillis and Alan Harlan; two granddaughters, Ansley Fletcher and Raegan Harlan; as well as one grandson, Calum Gillis.
