Peter Schmidt
July 31st, 1944 - August 14th, 2016
Peter Schmidt, 72, passed away peacefully of lung cancer on August 14, 2016 in Olympia, Washington. Born on July 31, 1944 to Benedict and Louise Schmidt in Velva, North Dakota, he was a resident of Olympia, and also lived in Maple Valley and Anacortes. Peter graduated from Olympia High School and attended college. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as Command Master Chief, and then joined the Navy Reserve. From CHB5, he was selected to the Battalion Staff during Operation Desert Storm. Professionally, he was the Program Manager of Specialty Compliance at the Department of Labor and Industries, and formerly as a marine and dock inspector. He married the love of his life, Anna Belen Fernandez, on April 15, 1993. Peter was a loving, caring and kind-hearted man who enjoyed spending time and having fun with his family, friends and favorite dog, Ginger. A great handyman and gardener, he also had a passion for fishing, hunting, camping and traveling. Peter was hardworking yet easy-going by nature, and he liked meeting challenges. When he faced a situation, he was quick to ask, “What are they going to do? Take my middle name?” Then he answered with, “Go ahead. I don’t have one.” Peter is survived by his wife, Anna Belen Schmidt; sons, Matthew Schmidt (Kelli Schmidt), Joshua Fernandez, and Jason Fernandez; daughter, Angela McPherson (Mac McPherson); four grandchildren, Nya McPherson, Denae McPherson, Sterling Schmidt and Kelsey Schmidt; brother, Paul Schmidt (Gina Schmidt); sisters, Audrey Head (Jim Head), Alice Dooley, Ida Jacobs (Jim Jacobs), Bonnie Tuttle (Warren Tuttle), and Joyce Sviatek (Karl Sviatek); former wife, Nancy Lee Lovrien; and his beloved dog, Ginger. He was predeceased by his parents, Benedict and Louise Schmidt; grandparents, Peter and Anna Schmidt; sisters, Cheryl Schmidt and Lucille Jenson; and brothers-in-law Larry Bragg and Larry Dooley. Memorial donations may be made to Providence Hospice. Please leave memories of Peter or condolences for his family in the Guestbook below.
