Theresa “Teri” (Wedl)Sommerfeldt passed away on December 22, 2024.

Theresa Dorothy Wedl was born in Watertown, Wisconsin on November 8, 1946, to her parents, Wilfred and Leona Brigowatz Wedl. She was the fourth of seven siblings. She graduated from St. John’s Catholic Grade School in 1960, and from Jefferson High School in 1964. She attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Madison, graduating on August 6, 1967.

She began her nursing career working in the OB/GYN Ward at the Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital. Over the 4th of July holiday in 1967 while visiting Boulder, Colorado with Jim’s parents, she was engaged to James Sommerfeldt, who was employed by IBM in Boulder, Colorado. The two were wed at St. John’s Catholic Church in Jefferson, WI on October 14, 1967. Between then and November of 1975 they had four children, Mike, Tom, Jodi, and Gretchen, each born in a different state: Minnesota, New York, California, and Wisconsin. We thought IBM meant “I’ve Been Moved”, moving 7 times by IBM in 7 years. Over the next 25 years she was a wonderful Mom, devoted wife, homemaker, and a babysitter for many.

After Jim retired in 1998 from IBM they started to build their dream retirement home in Lac du Flambeau, WI, and in March of 2000 they moved into a totally unfinished but beautiful log home on a peaceful lake. Teri was an excellent baker and loved to make goodies for friends and family. She found a job at a bakery in Minocqua, where she worked the 3 AM shift for about 6 years. Teri loved walking and hiking anywhere she could. She enjoyed knitting and loved to read. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life, and she loved to be with them any chance she could. She was a beautiful and thoughtful friend to so many and will be terribly missed by all.

She is survived by Jim, her husband of 57 years, sons Michael of Boise, Idaho and Tom of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, daughters Jodi (Randy) Kleinhans of Bozeman, Montana and Gretchen (Frank) Marek of Oconomowoc Lake, Wisconsin, siblings Dick (Judy) Wedl, Beverly Probst, Mary Jo Bauer, and Kitty Sukow all of Jefferson, Wisconsin. Also 10 loving grandchildren, Kyle (Johanna), Mitchell (Miranda), Jake, Logan (Ayla), Maggie, Fuzzy, Sam, Willow, Sydney, and Lily. Along with 5 great grandchildren, Charlie Jo, Abel, Louie, Nash, Nyla and many nephews, nieces, cousins and wonderful caring friends. Preceding her in death are her parents Wilfred and Leona Wedl, sisters Diane and Susan, and brothers-in-law Jerry Probst and Dean Sukow.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Jefferson, Wisconsin on June 20, 2025. At 11:00am. Friends may call at the church on Friday, June 20, 2025, from 10:00am until the time of the service. Inurnment will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson, Wisconsin after the Memorial Service.
