James was born to Harry and Alberta Cooley. During his middle and high school years excelled in baseball and basketball. After graduation he got drafted into the Army which took him to Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. 

 

He moved to Colorado Springs in 1982 where he started working at Team Chevrolet in the car business, after a few years he opened his own wholesale auto business "Captain Cooley Cars". He was in business for 32 years and created some wonderful business relationships and was respected by many. After the success of "Captain Cooley Cars" he sold the business and retired in 2007. 

 

He met his wife Nancy Jean Wagner in 1983 and they were married on December 29, 1984. Destination of their honeymoon was in Las Vegas, Nevada where some of Nancy's family  were to celebrate with them. 

 

They would have been celebrating their 40-year wedding anniversary in December. 

James has a daughter, Jami Dalee Pauly and her husband Steve Russell Pauly. They have three grown boys including their spouses/fiancées' Kalib Mattheew Loy (Briana), Colton Seth Pauly (Larisa) and Carson James Pauly (Mareena). A son, Joshua James Cooley and his wife Dana Nicole Cooley. Including 6 great grandchildren. He also has a sister, Nancy Corrick (Dennis Corrick) and their children; Denny Corrick and Sherry Corrick. 

 

He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Alberta Cooley and brothers Edward Cooley and Michael Cooley. 

 

His legacy will be remembered by his leadership and being an amazing husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a devoted Christian and servant of Jesus. He attended the Road at Chapel Hills Church and also attended many men's groups including "Wholehearted Men" which is near and dear to his heart and the fellowship that he shared with these men. 

 

James loved playing golf any chance he got. He had been playing golf since the age of 15. During his later years he was in many tournaments and his wife participated in the sport with him. He enjoyed watching his sports (golf, baseball and football).

During he and his wife's marriage they were blessed with amazing and devoted friendships that have meant to world to them.  

 

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. The Road at Chapel Hills Church, 2025 Parliament Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80920.
