Monte I. Smith

Monte I. Smith, 67, of Englewood, FL passed away Thursday, July 2, 2015. His family was by his side. He was comfortable, happy, and surrounded by love. Monte was born to Sampson and Dorothy Smith on May 5, 1948, in New York City. After the untimely passing of his mother, he was lovingly raised from infancy by Sam's second wife, Rose. He moved to Jackman, ME in 1970. Jackman is where he met his now ex-wife Gail, where they got married, and where they had their 2 sons, Paul and Derrick. In 1982, they moved to FL, and Englewood became home for good. As a career Real Estate broker, he previously owned Prudential New Horizons Realty, as well as Englewood Martial Arts. He loved sports, especially baseball. A diehard Yankee fan, he loved to share childhood stories about the old Stadium, and was always up for chatting about yesterday's highlights. He loved fishing, and many of his closest friends have come from his time on the pier during snook season. A self-proclaimed Dead Head, his love for music never wavered. From being at Woodstock, to shows at the Fillmore East, he saw all the greats like Hendrix, Dylan, Clapton, and Jefferson Airplane. Survivors include sons, Paul, 38, and Derrick, 35. Derrick and his wife Fernanda are parents to Monte's grandchildren, Zoë and Nolan, who he absolutely adored. His ex-wife and best friends, Gail and her husband, Bruce. His father, Sam Smith, sister Michele (Bob), brother David (Leslie), and brother Michael. We will celebrate the life of Monte Smith on Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S McCall Rd. Englewood, FL 34224. The family will receive friends from 1pm until service time at 2pm. The family would love for this to be a non-formal celebration filled with love and memories, so please dress casually.
