William G. Smith
June 15th, 1924 - April 8th, 2017
William G. Smith, 92 of Rotonda West, FL died Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Englewood Community Hospital. He was born on June 15, 1924 in Hammond, IN to Percy T. and Letha Mae (Miller) Smith. Mr. Smith served in the US Army during WW-II. He was the VP of Smith Cheverolet in Hammond, IN for 20 years and then moved to Albany, NY and opened Smith Pontiac which he and his wife Joan operated for 25 years. He moved to Florida in 2005 after retiring from the automobile business. His hobbies included woodworking, sailing and reading historical and biographical novels. He is survived by four children: William Smith, Jr. of Denver, CO; Shelley (Norbert) Baumgartner of E. Lansing, MI; Letha (Terrence) Walsh of Punta Gorda, FL; David Smith of Clifton Park, NY; nine grandchildren: Tarah, Amber, Brianne, Kyle, Courtney, Tyler, Matthew, Shannen and Chloe and four great granddaughters: Athena, Lilah, Mina and Alivia. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife Joan and his son Mark. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Englewood Community Funeral Home, Inc. 3070 S. McCall Rd. Englewood, FL 34224. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church 5265 Placida Rd. Englewood, FL 34224 on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 9:30 AM. Interment will be on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 12:30 PM at Sarasota National VA Cemetery. The family requests contributions in Mr. Smith memory to Sloan Kettering Hospital at www.mshcc.org.
