Wanda Oaks
June 5th, 1940 - April 30th, 2014
Wanda Juanita Gillenwater Oaks, 73, of Church Hill went home to be with the Lord Wednesday afternoon, April 30, 2014 at Indian Path Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Ft. Blackmore, VA, was a former resident of Kingsport and had lived in Church Hill since 2006. Ms. Oaks attended Living Word Church of God, Gray Station, formerly attended the Apostolic Revival Church on the Gate City Highway and was very dedicated in her work for the Lord. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and loved all her family. She was such an inspiration to everyone and always had a smile on her face. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers, Carol Duncan, Maggie Ward and Independent Living staff. She was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Allen Wilson in 1984 and brothers, Homer Gillenwater in 2010 and L.C. Gillenwater in 2011. Surviving are her daughter, Kathy Sue Oaks and husband, Doug; son, Alvin Wiley Wilson and wife, Michelle; grandchildren, Lynn Begley, Michelle Boyer, Latasha Wilson, Shawn Wilson, Joshua Wilson and Tosha Hooven; step grandsons, Brian Oaks and Allen Begley; great grandchildren, Chelsea Wexler, Alexis Begley, Megan Boyer, Kaitlyn Hooven, Jayda Hooven, and Jason Hooven; step great granddaughter, Gabi Oaks; one great-great granddaughter, Harley Wilson; sisters, Shirley Dixon and husband, Leonard, Shelby Thacker and husband, Charlie, Elizabeth Barnette, Peggy Bailey, Nellie Hutson and husband, Tommy and Joann France and husband, Jason; brothers, Billy Gillenwater and wife, Susie, J.C. Gillenwater and wife, Patricia, Norman Gillenwater and wife, Donna, Fred Gillenwater and Carroll Gillenwater; sisters in law, Cheryl Gillenwater and Cathy Gillenwater and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 pm Friday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Steve Guinn, Rev. Leonard Dixon and Rev. Charlie Thacker officiating. Music will be provided by Gina and Tommy Gillenwater. A graveside service will be held at 11 am Saturday at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Chelsea Wexler, Hunter Gillenwater, Chad Barnette, Shawn Wilson, Joshua Wilson, Bobby Gillenwater and Billy Gillenwater. Family and friends are asked to meet at funeral home at 10 am to go to cemetery in a procession. Carter-Trent Funeral Home downtown Kingsport is serving the family of Wanda Oaks.
