Barbara Thornhill Callaghan, 77, of Holmes Beach, FL, (formerly of Long Island, NY) passed away peacefully on February 3, 2015, with her family at her bedside. She was born on September 26, 1937, in Greenport, NY, to the late Winifred J. and Harold Thornhill, Sr. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Joseph F. Callaghan, and their daughter, Megan (Lucas) Haney, and grandchild Cassidy Jo Haney. Also by his children: Marie (Bill) Pyne, Joseph Callaghan and George Callaghan; three grandchildren: Suzanne Pyne, Jacqueline (Pat) Amato and Jessica (Edward) Stewart, and three great grandchildren: Anthony Amato, and Eddie and Carly Stewart. She is also survived by siblings: Frank (Edy) Thornhill, Harold (Joan) Thornhill, Jr., and Ann Felli; three brothers-in-law: Paul Callaghan, James (Jo Anne) Callaghan and Matthew (Margo) Callaghan; two sisters-in-law: Mary (Chuck) Stealey and Martha Callaghan; her aunt, Margaret Kroleski; and twenty nieces and nephews. Barbara graduated from Greenport High School and received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from SUNY at Albany, NY. She taught business classes at North Babylon High School and was a Professor in the Business Division at Suffolk County Community College. She received recognition from the State University of New York with a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She authored a Secretarial Curriculum and was an expert proofreader. She volunteered for and supported many worthwhile causes and traveled extensively, especially on cruise ships. Barbara had a great passion for football and was a “Gator Mom.” In Florida she was involved in her Church fund-raising activities, Anna Maria Island Garden Club, book club, and many other social endeavors. Visitation will be held at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, 720 Manatee, Avenue West, Bradenton, FL, on Friday, February 6th, from 2–4 PM and 7–9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, February 7th, at 10:30 AM at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 South Harbor Drive, Holmes Beach, FL.
