Dorothy Locke Spivey
January 28th, 1927 - September 17th, 2015
Dorothy Locke Spivey, 88 of Kingsport, Tennessee passed away Thursday, September 17, 2015 surrounded by her immediate family at her residence of almost 70 years. Dorothy Locke Spivey was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Lucy Locke, her brothers, Claude and Wesley Locke, her sisters, Alma Poole and Aileen Ellison and her beloved son, Donald Wayne Spivey. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 plus years, Carl M. Spivey; her son Rick and wife, Sandy Spivey; her grandson, Matthew and wife, Rebecca Spivey; her great grandchildren, Miller Spivey and Mabel Spivey; her grandson, Joseph & wife Misty Spivey. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces; grand nephews and nieces; great grand nephews and nieces; very loving and special in-laws, Irene Harville and Jean Spivey; and a very special niece, Alma Ellison Ferguson of Greeneville, South Carolina, who was the daughter she never had. Dot, as her friends knew her, was born in Woodruff, South Carolina on January 28, 1927. She met the love of her life in 1945 and they were married on June 4, 1946. Dot had numerous jobs but her primary interest was caring for children. She operated and served as the director at Calvary Baptist Childcare Center for many years as well as the Litz Manor Childcare Center for numerous years. After retiring, she enjoyed keeping children in her home for their working mothers and fathers. These children are too numerous to count but here were two very special children, Josh and Justin Quillen, whom she cared for deeply. She and her husband, Carl were fixtures at Habitat for Humanity where her co-workers will miss her legendary pinto beans and cornbread meals. The central and most important part of her life was her family. She was a wonderful mother and wife and she had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed by all who knew her and were somehow touched by her life. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel at First Baptist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee with Dr. Marvin Cameron, officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery immediately following the services. Following the burial, the family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Sandy Spivey, located at 520 Brandonwood Road, Kingsport Tennessee until 6:00 P.M. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport is serving family of Dorothy Locke Spivey.
