Margaret Ann Parks Cornett, 76, of Kingsport, went home peacefully to be with her heavenly Father on Monday, May 6, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Born August 2, 1936 in Big Moccasin, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Nathan Parks and the late Anna Fugate Parks. Margaret was a long time resident of Kingsport where she had lived since leaving her childhood home in Big Moccasin, Virginia. She proudly graduated from Shoemaker High School and worked as a proofreader for the Kingsport Press. In addition to raising her family, she worked in the home fashions department of Parks-Belk for nearly 20 years. Margaret loved to cook and sew, always kept a bountiful garden, and enjoyed restoring antique furniture. She was a lifelong member of Holston View United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 35 years. She valued education and impressed this upon her children, never once tolerating bad grammar. More than any of these accomplishments, however, she was most proud of her grandchildren and loved to spend time with each of them. In addition to her parents, her brother, William H. Parks, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Donald Cornett; two sons, Greg Cornett and his wife, Kathleen of Kingsport, Ted Cornett of Decatur, Georgia; one daughter, Beth Porter and her husband, Donald of Chesapeake, Virginia; brothers, Robert R. Parks of Gate City, Virginia and, Zane Parks of Nicklesville, Virginia; sister, Georgia Parks of Enterprise, Alabama; eight grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013 at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with her faithful-to-the-end pastor, Reverend Don Hanshew and longtime family friend, Reverend Bob Copeland officiating. Music will be provided by Gail Brown. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Holston View Cemetery. Special friends will serve as pallbearers; honorary pallbearers will be her prior Sunday School students from throughout the years. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holston View United Methodist Church, 174 Church Street, Weber City, Virginia, 24290. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff of Wellington Place of Kingsport for the compassion and care extended to Margaret over the last 2 ½ years and appreciation to Wellmont Hospice for their loving care in her final days. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City is serving the Cornett family.
