Online Obituaries for Lexington, KY Russell L. Bogue, 92, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017. Russ was born in Blue Hill, NE on July 17, 1924. He was educated in Nebraska schools and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and his Doctorate from the University of Wyoming. Russ and Nancy Snyder were married in 1956 and became the loving parents of Russ (Peter), Randy, and Rob (Mandy). He cherished his grandchildren Cassi, Ryan, Bob, Katie, Zeb, Zoe, and Flynn as well as his great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Samantha, Alden and Johnny. He also leaves his much loved dog and faithful companion, Sophia. Russ served on the USS Stockham during WWII in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946. Russs life was one of the consummate coach. He worked with young and inexperienced players, believing they could be winners. He coached basketball at Minden High School for three years, leading the team to district and state championships. He was awarded Coach of the Year by The Omaha World Herald. The team was later awarded part of the Dynamic Dynasty of the 1950's in Nebraska. Russ served as basketball and baseball coach at Hastings College for seven years. During that time the school won the basketball championship twice and Russ was again voted Coach of the Year in basketball by The Omaha World Herald. He continued to take his teams to winning seasons. They were baseball champions once and in the NAIA playoff twice. He was awarded the Hastings College Legacy award for his accomplishments in 2006. While attending the University of Wyoming in 1963 he coached the high school team in Cross Country. They won the state championship that year for the first time. Russ was Chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education Recreation and Athletics at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas for 12 years. He was also Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education Recreation, and Athletics at Eastern Kentucky University until his retirement in 1986. Russs personal commitment in life was to stay positive. When returning from war he vowed to treat everyone with dignity and respect. His friendly demeanor led everyone who met him to say Russ never met a stranger. Funeral Information A Celebration of Life and reception will be held 12:30p-2:00p on Friday, February 24, 2017 at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00p, with The Reverend Marcia Hunter and The Reverend Paula Ott, and The Very Reverend Carol Wade officiating. Burial will be held 11:00a prior to service at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
