Rev. Dr. Charles Morton Hanna, Jr. The Rev. Dr. Charles Morton Hanna, Jr., 88, husband of Phyllis Shelby Hanna, died in Lexington, KY on July 27. He was born February 25, 1925 in Hitchens, KY, son of the late C. Morton Hanna and Margaret Bell Hanna. Charles was educated at Indiana University, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and McCormick Seminary in Chicago. He served 6 rural churches near Tupelo, MS, Somerset Presbyterian Church, and Highland Presbyterian Church in Louisville before becoming the Executive Presbyter of Transylvania Presbytery in Lexington, KY. During his tenure, he supervised the unification of 5 Presbyteries in central and eastern KY. He was honored by Pikeville College with a Doctor of Divinity Degree. On his retirement, he was granted Emeritus status and continued to serve the Presbytery in many roles including serving as an interim Associate Pastor at Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington for 2 years. Charles is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a sister Bette Hanna Sikes; 4 children, Jill Hanna (Rich Haley), Lyle Shelby (Mary Diane McCord) Hanna, William Morton (Nancy Maxwell) Hanna, Patrick Carper (Lynn Harmon) Hanna; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He had a remarkable memory for names, places and events and a special interest in relationships. He could remember how people were related going back several generations and used this talent to bring people together for the good of their community! He helped found Habitat for Humanity in Lexington and was involved in Golden K Kiwanis, Meals on Wheels and Helping Hands Alzheimer's day-center. Funeral Information A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Hunter Presbyterian Church, 109 Rosemont Garden, Lexington.
