Julia Fay Nelson (age 88) passed away quietly at home on March 12, 2021. She was in the care of her daughter Melissa, holding her hand, while knowing her precious grandchildren Jenna and Dakota were close. She went on her terms, surrounded in comfort and love. Julia was born on August 25, 1932 in Adgateville, Georgia (Jasper County) and was the daughter of the late William McClayton Freeman and Bertha Florence Waits Freeman. Julia graduated from Jones County High School (Gray, Georgia) where she played Varsity basketball. After graduating, she traveled the world as a proud Navy wife. Julia worked as a bank teller and accountant, while holding her Real Estate License. Julia was an avid reader, who loved dogs, bowling, shopping, laughter, and gospel music. Julia’s proudest role was being a beloved Mom and Nana, and she took immense pride in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her son George Sheffield of Gray, GA; daughter Monet Sheffield of Stone Mountain, GA; daughter Melissa Sheffield of Seattle, WA and stepdaughter Susan Roberts of Lyle, WA. Julia had 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a large extended family. Julia was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, CDR. Jack D. Nelson; her brothers Samuel (Kathryn) Freeman and Loy Freeman; and her sister Jacquelyn (Jimmy) Findley. Julia’s talents were many and she had an energy and zest that lit up any room. Her natural Southern charm and whit was ever present, even towards the end of her life. Julia was a devout Christian and proud member of Grace Bible Church in Port Orchard, WA. Her love of God and family were the core of her being. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to any of Julia’s three favorite charities: The Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). A Celebration of Life for Julia will be held at a later date in Jones County, Georgia.
