James Elliott Bryant
August 2nd, 1939 - January 23rd, 2022
James Elliott Bryant departed this life at “the ripe old age of 82” on January 23, 2022. He was born in Auburn, NY to Dr. Frank & Janice Bryant. He grew up in California and after high school attended USC, gaining his degree in architecture. He worked under John Lautner and then taught at UC Boulder, before moving to Seattle in 1971. In Seattle his sister introduced him to Patty and their connection was immediate. They married in 1976. They were delighted when their daughter Hilary was born in 1985. James enjoyed reading and was constantly in search of knowledge, especially about history and religion. After much research, the whole family attended a service at St. Paul’s Orthodox Church and became members in 1994. James became very active in the church and was ordained as a Deacon in 2002, serving until his passing. He also attained his Master’s degree in Eastern Orthodox Theology. Through St. Paul’s, he spearheaded efforts to serve meals at St. Martin de Porres Shelter for many years. James’s passion and calling to architecture was reflected in his work. From residential to commercial design, he knew how to make a space both functional and beautiful and was skilled at utilizing the golden ratio. He was especially happy when he was able to combine his love of architecture and Orthodoxy to design Orthodox churches. All-Merciful Savior Monastery on Vashon Island was one of his favorite projects. James also enjoyed cooking, gardening, cowboy movies & football. He had a talent for napping and could do so anywhere, at any time. He was a man of few words, unless the topic was of great interest to him, and then the facts flowed freely. One of his favorite verses: "Aspire to lead a quiet life, and mind your own business.” (1 Thessalonians 4:11) He and Patty enjoyed outdoor activities, riding horses, and spending time with family and friends. They often opened their home for people to stay, for a weekend or several months. James was a firm believer that it was never too late to start something new; whether it be learning to play the viola at age 55 or becoming a certified mediator at age 70. He is survived by his wife Patty, daughter Hilary (Michael) Schwed, and sisters Marcia and Lynne. His funeral will be at 10am on February 01, 2022, at St. Paul Orthodox Church in Brier.
