Al was born in Louisiana as the middle child of Elmer Smith and Ollie Shoemaker. He had an older sister, Olivia, and a younger sister, Betty, and did his best to be as annoying to them as any brother could be. The family relocated to Southern California when he was 6, where he lived until moving to the Northwest in 1972. He graduated from Bell Gardens High School and attended Long Beach City College and Long Beach State; after college, Al, played semi-pro football as he began his long career in sales. For the past 30 years he specialized in Retail, specifically Mens, and Mens Big and Tall Clothing. He loved to talk and enjoyed working with his customers and collogues. Al married Pat Stephens Carroll 39 years ago in 1971, and together they moved to Chelan, WA, Coeur dAlene, ID, Reno NV, and back to the Seattle area, where they have lived in Redmond and Bothell for the past 20 yrs. Between them they have son, Guy (DeeDee) Smith, daughter, Lori (Patrick) Carroll Wiley, and son, Sean Carroll. Al was always ready with the newest pictures of his 7 grandchildren: Clayton and Lauren (Gardner) Smith; Tayler, Brooke, and Cole Wiley; Austin and Justin Carroll; and most recently, his 2 great grandbabies, Wesley and Wade Gardner. Aside from his family, Al enjoyed reading, bridge, travel and has been an avid fisherman all of his adult life. Al succumbed to lung cancer after fighting the good fight for many months, and leaves his wife and children, along with 2 sisters-in-law and their husbands, 1 brother-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins. His 2 sisters and 1 grandson preceded him in death. Announcement: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to The Evergreen Hospice Center, 12822 124th Lane NE, Kirkland, WA 98034
