George H. Pruette

Lexington, KY George Pruette, a Kentucky Thoroughbred owner breeder, died April 17, 2017. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years Carol Ann and daughter Lynn Pruette of Savannah, GA and a brother Robert O. Pruette of Sarasota, Fl.. He is preceded in death by his son R. M. Pruette. He was born January 28, 1931 in Memphis, Tennessee where he was educated and entered the U.S Army. Following service with the Third Infantry Division during the Korean War, he was hired by The Evening News Association, owner of the Detroit News and WWJ Television where he worked as a reported and anchorman for 17 years. Following the 1967 Detroit riots during which 40 people were killed, he was the only Detroit reporter subpoenaed by the Senate subcommittee investigating urban violence in America. His testimony included newsreel film of the riots that ended only after President Lyndon Johnson sent the 101st Airborne to Detroit. In 1977 he joined General Motors where as Director of Corporate Advertising he managed GM sponsorship of several major television events including and 8 hour CBS miniseries on the life of George Washington, as well as the PBS Ken Burns films The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, Kennedy Center Honors and others. In 1991 he retired from GM and moved to a Bourbon County horse farm where he continued a life along affection for horses: from farm horses as a child, to fox hunting in the Michigan horse country, to breeding and racing Thoroughbreds in Michigan and Kentucky. For 15 years he produced the weekly concerts of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra hosted by Dick Cavett and heard on more than 400 commercial and public radio stations. He was a former board member of the Metamora Hunt of Metamora, Michigan, The Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, The Thoroughbred Club of America and The Keenland Club.
