James G. Long
September 18th, 1909 - December 1st, 2014
Born into a Naval family in Bremerton Washington to Sarah Hillstrand and James Garfield Long, a graduate of Stadium High School in Tacoma and the University of Washington in Seattle. pJim was an avid writer and editor of numerous Seattle, New York City and Honolulu newspapers and magazines. He received four Clio Awards for his work as a radio producer. pOrdained in 1954 into Episcopal ministry, he served parishes in Seattle and the surrounding area, Hawaii and Oregon. He acted as Press Officer for the National Episcopal Church in New York City and as Director of the Diocesan Press Service. pJim served in World War II as a Lieutenant Commander; was Press Aide to Vice Admiral John McCain, Commander of the Second Carrier Task Force Pacific, famous for its exploits as Task Force 38. pIn retirement Jim became a docent for the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. He wrote articles for the Woodland Ramblings and authored the Chicken Chat editorials. In fall of 2014 he was made an honorary docent. His love of animals was expressed in his writings many in the haiku format. pAfter a long and active life as a journalist, a Naval officer and an Anglican priest, Jim died in Seattle at the age of one hundred and five. He is preceded this year in death by his cherished wife, Nancy Tomlinson Long. He is survived by daughters Susan Scott-LaRue of Vancouver Washington and Constance Scott Nardi and grandson Lawrence T. Nardi of Berkeley California. pTwo children, Sarah and Kimo are deceased. pBurial service will be held for Jim December 19, 2014 at St. Marks Cathedral in Seattle at 2:00 PM.
