Donald N. Hammond Sr., 87, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018. A native of Frankfort, he was born on January 2, 1931 to the late William Hammond and Anna Katherine Berry Rankin. He was retired from the Department of Finance and was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean War. Donald was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. Anyone that knows him knows that he had a passion for singing. He sang gospel music his entire life. Over the years, he sang with the Mel-O-Tones; Followers Quartet; and the Don Hammond Singers. He professed his love for God through the music that he sang and his talent was heard at many services. He was also known for his ability to make those around him laugh and feel loved. Nobody was a stranger to him and he welcomed anyone and everyone into his life. He filled the life of others with joy and love everywhere that he went. His voice and his whistle could be heard from miles away. He enjoyed going to Kroger and Wal-Mart each Saturday to whistle and get his daily walk in. He was known for being the guy who perfected “The Andy Griffith” theme song with his whistle. He spent his years of retirement being the staple to his family. He was a wonderful husband, a great father, a loving grandfather, and an amazing friend. He also became a bonafide believer of astrology and enjoyed studying horoscopes. He taught everyone that the Bible also referenced astrology and explained the 12 tribes of Judah along with his horoscope lessons. He is a man that will be missed greatly by many. He is survived by his children, Donnie (Sherri) Hammond Jr., Frankfort; and Sheila (Tony Sr.) Morris, Frankfort; his sister, Joan (Cecil) Hayden, Frankfort; his grandchildren, Donnie Hammond III, Tony Morris Jr., and Lindsey Morris; and his great grandson, Maddox Hammond. He was also survived by his cousin, Martha Tolson, and many nieces and nephews in which he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Mildred Hicks Hammond and his sister, Jean Hovey. Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. Rev. Jimmy Roberts, Pastor Daniel Rogers, and Pastor Dennis Hasty will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
