Stanley Carter, 98, of Versailles, died Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Thomson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, Kentucky. Born October 11, 1919 in Woodford County, he was the son of the late Sarah Barnett Carter and John Mosby Carter of Fintville. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Political Science and History, and a degree from the Kentucky College of Law. He was a veteran of World War II where he spent more than two years in the China-Burma-India Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal for meritorious service performed in the combat area. He was elected State Representative for Jessamine and Woodford County, and served from 1950 to 1951. Following his term in the Legislature, he worked in State Government as Assistant Director, Division of Securities, Department of Banking, and also, in the Department of Personnel. He served as the Air Civil Defense Monitor for Kentucky by request of Governor Weatherby. Following an overseas assignment in Pacific Air Force Headquarters (all Pacific, Korea to Vietnam), he was Director and Instructor of the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Tennessee for four years. After serving 25 ½ years of military service, he retired as a Lt. Colonel and returned to Versailles. Stanley was a long time member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Versailles, KY. He was an avid UK basketball and football fan. He also loved golf and played until his health prohibited playing. He is survived by his loving daughter, Pattie Carter, many nieces and nephews, and his wonderful caregivers, Linda Church, Angela Bowen, Christine Grimes, Brittany Terry, Susie Frazier, and Bill Sulicz. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Douglas Carter, who died in 1963 at the age of 20, a sister, Mattie Lee Todd, and three brothers, Jack Carter, John Will Carter and Raymond Carter. Visitation is Thursday, September 27, from 5:30-8:00pm at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill. The Funeral will be 11:30am, Friday, September 28, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the Versailles Cemetery. Pall bearers are Russell Atchison, Thomas Finsand, Ray Goodrich, Tod Lanter, Bo Lanter, and Tim Lanter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Woodford or Franklin County Humane Society or the Versailles First Christian Church, Lexington Road, Versailles.
