Keegan Michael Smith
May 4th, 2000 - December 27th, 2018
Keegan Michael Smith, age 18, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018. Keegan was born May 4, 2000 in Lexington, KY to Charles Michael and Edwina Goldsmith Smith. She is survived by her parents Chuck and Edwina Smith; 2 brothers, Ethan and Jackson Smith, her second family Danny and Maggie Igo, their children and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Every second of Keegan Michael Smith’s life was filled with love and sweetness, and every single moment provided all those she loved with indelible memories. Being born into a family that believes in the power of music and the arts, Keegan loved snuggling with her Dad, Mom and brothers under comfy blankets to watch her favorite musicals, like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and of course her favorite—Mary Poppins. She also was a big sports fan (probably because it meant more snuggle time with her brothers) and would sit with them for hours on end watching Sports Center along with basketball and football games. During her elementary school years Keegan greatly enjoyed attending “Mom’s school” Clays Mill Elementary. At Clays Mill Keegan was surrounded by classmates, teachers, and therapists who had a great understanding that loving a child under their educational care was the absolute greatest gift they could provide. At the point she no longer could attend school her homebound teacher and therapists continued to love her while providing learning experiences that enhanced her life. Under the medical care of Dr. Mary Jane LaGrew and Dr. Sarah Sallas, Keegan thrived 17+ years longer than any specialist had predicted. Keegan was born with so much love to share that she became a very important member of another family—Danny (“Pap”) and Maggie (“Granny”) Igo. Keegan was forever a princess at heart, as she always enjoyed going on shopping trips with “Granny,” and never missed her routine visit to the beauty shop. Always the social butterfly, Keegan greatly enjoyed birthday parties, swinging on “Pap’s” swing set, especially when family was near, and pool time with her cousins. A girl with a discerning palate, she particularly enjoyed her ice cream with chocolate syrup, buttercream frosting, Bob Evans mashed potatoes, and Kroger chocolate milk. Keegan’s sense of humor was abundant, and was most evident anytime one of her many admirers would drop something, fall down, or otherwise be clumsy! She loved silly music, hated hats, and always let folks know where they stood in her mind with a simple look in her eye. With the loving help of “Granny,” Keegan proved to be a prolific home run hitter with all her buddies at the Bluegrass Miracle League ball field. As with all angels who visit for a time, Keegan has returned home and has left this world a better place... but has also left a void that can’t be filled here in this world. She was—and is— one of God’s greatest blessings ever. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends on Friday, January 4, 2018 from 4-7 PM at Clark Legacy Center-Brannon Crossing in Nicholasville, KY. Private family graveside services will be held for Keegan. Keegan's family has requested that contributions be made in her memory to the Toyota Miracle League or the Lexington Dream Factory.
