Dr. Carol Jane Altizer Tuning, 73, of Frankfort, died on December 3, 2019 after struggling bravely for several years from facial cancer. Carol was born in Radford, VA, and spent several years in both Salem, VA and Richmond, VA before moving to Frankfort with her devoted husband of 36 years, Dr. Austin Tuning. She was preceded in death by Dr. Tuning. Also, her parents Annie and Davis Altizer (Radford, VA) and Austin’s mother Lettie Tuning (Salem, VA). Carol is survived by her brother, Roley Altizer, and her sister-in-law, Mary Eve Altizer, both of whom live in Roanoke, VA. Also, her niece, Mary Claire Altizer (New York City) and nephew, James D. Altizer (Charlotte, NC). Additionally, she is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins, and dear friends Dusty and Mary Rhodes. Sarah Edelen and Ashley Moore were devoted caregivers to Carol for the past several months. She received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Radford University, after which she was a beloved teacher at Glenvar High School in Salem. VA for several years. She also received master’s and PhD degrees in education from Virginia Tech. Following the receipt of her PhD, she held educational administrative and teaching positions in both the Richmond, VA and Frankfort areas. Carol and Austin were very active members of the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lexington, where they worked diligently and generously for many years. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 2pm until 3:30pm at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd. She will be buried with her husband Austin in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, KY.
