Dr. Edgar L Sagan
October 25th, 1930 - February 1st, 2022
Edgar L. Sagan passed away in Lexington, KY on February 1, 2022 while surrounded by family. Ed was born in Ossining, NY on October 25, 1930 to Justus and Emma Kunze Sagan, who were German immigrants. At 16, he dropped out of school to help his parents on the family farm. He continued to study at home and passed the NY Regents Exams to graduate on time with his class. Ed enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Ed enrolled at Hartwick College, where he met Marilyn Kamb. On their first date, Ed told Marilyn he was going to marry her. They were married in December 1956. Ed obtained a Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Ed devoted most of his professional career to the UK College of Education, where he twice served as Dean of the College. He wanted it known that he did indeed write his own jokes for faculty meetings! Ed enjoyed woodworking, mowing with his tractor, UK basketball and travel. He especially liked summer road trips towing his camper (with Folbot kayak tied on top), his window down and the a/c turned off (while the kids in the back whined about the heat). Ed was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn; their children, Kenneth (Becky) Sagan, Lexington, KY, Randall (Leslie) Sagan, Atlanta, GA, Valerie (John) Overlan, Lexington, KY, and Laurie (William Jr.) Vennes, Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Krista (Ben) Citron, Jennifer (Byron) Creekmore, Katharine (Tyler) Sagan-Buttleman, Grant(Kate) Sagan, Tyler Sagan, John (fiancée Andrea Boyer) Sagan,Kyle Overlan, Erik Overlan, William Vennes III and Brent Vennes; and great-grandchildren, Lillian Citron, Phillip Citron, Cassidy Creekmore, Bradley Creekmore, Elizabeth June Buttleman and Theo Buttleman. A gathering of family and friends will take place Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing in Nicholasville, KY. Family and friends are also invited to a burial service at Camp Nelson National Cemetery at 9:00 am on Monday, February 7, 2022. Memorial contributions are suggested for the Edgar L. and Marilyn A. Sagan Fellowship Fund, c/o Aimee Baston, College of Education, University of Kentucky, 133 Dickey Hall, Lexington, KY 40506-0017.
