Gerald Thomas Hutcherson
March 13th, 1942 - December 18th, 2022
On Sunday, December 18, 2022 Gerald Thomas Hutcherson, 80,left his beloved family here on earth and entered into his heavenly home and the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, after a brief and unexpected illness, in Lexington, KY. During his lifetime, he answered to many other names by those who loved and knew him: Hutch, G.T., Bro, Grandpa, Uncle and Cuz. He was the nicest and most giving person you could ever hope to meet and he will be missed more that we can express. He was preceded in death by the love-of-his-life, his wife, Sandra (Sandy) Lee Harshfield Mobley Hutcherson of Lexington, KY, his beloved father, Rev. Hylton Lee Hutcherson and mother, Idellas McBride Hutcherson Rich, infant brother, Randall Harrison Hutcherson, Stepfather, G. Ed Rich, Maternal Grandparents Robert Harrison McBride and Trudie Mae Shelton, Step Grandmother, Mini Estelle McBride, many Uncles and Aunts, all of Danville, VA, and his niece, Leigh Raegan Brown Lorimer of Fort Worth, TX… all of whom he loved dearly. Our family draws comfort in knowing they were all there to welcome him home, and it brings joy to our hearts to imagine the smile on his face and the song in his heart to be reunited with each and every one. Born on March 13, 1942, in Danville, VA, he moved often with the family, but spent most of his growing up years in Jacksonville, FL., where his father became the Minister of Music at Berea Baptist Church. He graduated there from Andrew Jackson High School, after which he studied for a year at Bob Jones University, in Greenville, SC. Of all the places he lived, he felt more at home in Kentucky, where he lived for allof his adult life. It was there, as a Staff Sargent in the Kentucky Army National Guard, he met and fell in love with his future wife, Sandy, who, as a Major in the Kentucky Army National Guard, outranked him. He thought that was quite a feat on his part to win her over. They married on March 24, 1984 in Lexington and were truly a happy and devoted couple until her passing on April 18, 1997. It was the saddest day of his life and he continued to love her until his passing. Upon retirement from the Guard, Gerald, drew great pleasure in his volunteer work with organizations such as, the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s, “Team in Training”, where he taught and participated in race-walking across the county and once in Ireland. He loved helping with the FEI World Equestrian Games at the Horse Park, in Lexington, and answered their call throughout the year to help in anyway needed. It blessed him to drive cancer patients to and from their treatments for the Cancer Care organization. And, he had a special feeling of appreciation for the mission of Camp Hero and its care for suffering veterans and first responders. Whether family or friend, if you needed him, he was there… more often than not coming to the aid of his sisters wherever they were, whenever they needed him. Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Trudy Rains and Diana Leigh Brown of Virgini a Beach, VA, Step brother Michael Rich (Luretta) of Danville, VA, Step daughter, KathyMobley Farmer (Claude “Mooch), of Lexington, KY, Step-grandchildren, Ashley Farmer of Lexington KY and Justin Farmer (Carolyn), and Step great granddaughter Kathryn Elise, and he was so looking forward to the upcoming birth of her brother, Jacob Michael, of Hendersonville, TN. Nieces and Nephews include, Karol LeAnne Rains-Benedetto (Michael ), Virginia Beach, VA, John Barry Rains III (Betsy), ofJacksonville, FL, Rachel Elizabeth Brown, of Arlington, TX, and James Byron Brown, of Austin, TX; Great Nieces and Nephews: Allie, Juliette and Marco Benedetto, Lane and Wishard (Wish) Lorimer, Francesca Brown and many beloved cousins, friends and neighbors. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and hospice nurses of Baptist Health Lexington for the wonderful and compassionate care that gave to our loved one while in their care. A special thanks to Melissa Jones, Sue Wise, Lynn Buckles, Will and Miho Short, Rocco Besednjak, Deborah Hurt, and Hayden Kiser for the help and kindness they shared during his final days. All of these amazing people are living proof, Bro, that “nice guys don’t finish last.” A gathering will be held on February 11, 2023 from 2pm till 4pm, with a celebration of life service beginning at 3pm, at Clark Legacy Center-Brannon Crossing, Nicholasville. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Camp Hero Kentucky (https://campheroky.org), your favorite cancer care organization or a charity of your choice.
