Laura Marie Payton
April 23rd, 1940 - January 20th, 2023
Laura Marie Payton "Nanna", 82, passed away at home surrounded by family on Friday January 20, 2023. She was born on April 23, 1940 in Lexington, to the late John and Marie Shanks Kirkland. Laura graduated from BCTC with an associates degree in nursing in 1974. She began working for UK Hospital as an RN in 1965 while in school and retired in 1997 after 32 years. She enlisted in the Army in the 60's and was honorably discharged with the birth of her first child in 1962. She met her husband Clester Payton in 1963 and had her second child in 1964. She was a faithful member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church where she was involved with mission work, the senior choir and homebound work. She enjoyed reading, comedy, movies and traveling in her free time. In addition to her husband, Clester and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Hiriam Kirkland, Phillip Kirkland, her sister, Patricia Kirkland and great-grandson, Isaiah. Survivors include her children, Timothy Scott Payton and Rebecca Payton Garcia, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and her brothers, Kenneth Kirkland, Ronald (Carol) Kirkland, and Donald Kirkland. Funeral services will be Monday January 23, 2023, at 12pm, at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to ALS Association.www.als.org.
