Matthew M Martin
February 7th, 1918 - May 13th, 2018
Matthew M. Martin (Matty) passed away May 13th, 2018 at his home in Mukilteo, WA. His wife and son Richard were at his side. Matty was born in New York City, NY February 7, 1918 to immigrant parents, Nicola and Rose Morizio. At an early age he and his family moved to Brooklyn, NY where they built a house next to a beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Here he learned to swim, and swim he did until his final illness. He is survived by his wife Joyce, son Richard (Nancy), and daughters Carol Wade (Larry) and Ruth Martin, six grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Richard N. Martin. Memorial services will be held May 29th, 2018 at 1pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th Street SW, Lynnwood, WA. At a later date final interment will be at Mt. Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA. After he graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn in 1937, Matty first worked at odd jobs and then took over the family business of running a 100 car garage. In the spring of 1942 he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve. He served as an aviation mechanic in the South Pacific during WWII. Following the end of WWII, Matty and Joyce were married November 17th, 1945. They made their first home in Brooklyn where Richard and Carol were born. Matty reenlisted in the Navy and was stationed at Floyd Bennet NAS for three years. In 1950 they moved to Seattle, WA where Matty was attached to the Sand Point Naval Air Station for the next ten years. He became Chief and set up a training program for the "weekend warriors". In 1960 he transferred to NAS Jacksonville, FL for three years, completing 20 years in the Navy, after which he retired. He and his family returned to their home in Shoreline. The next 17 years Matty worked in the Health Sciences at the University of Washington and retired at the age of 62. In 1986 Matty and Joyce moved from Shoreline to Harbour Pointe in Mukilteo, WA, to live closer to their daughters. Matty loved to travel both in foreign countries and by motor home in the US. By 1999 his traveling days were over, so the next 18 winters were spent at Venture Out in Mesa, AZ, a recreational park for 55+ residents. Here they made new friends, had new activities and a pool where he swam almost every day. Matty was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Edmonds Kiwanis and a charter member of the new Mukilteo "Y". Matty loved his family dearly as did his whole extended family love him. May he rest in peace in the arms of a loving God. Memorial gifts may be given to a charity of your choice or the Memorial fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lynnwood.
